Why we grow

A backyard flower farm rooted in the belief that beauty belongs to everyone.

Ballard Backyard Blooms started with a simple conviction: beauty is not a luxury. It’s something all of us need — a small, reliable reminder, even on the hard days, that joy and wonder are still available to us.

When I learned that most flowers sold in America are flown in from overseas, I wanted to do something different. I started growing my own, right here in my Ballard backyard, with healthy soil (lots of compost and worms!), collected rainwater whenever possible, and no chemicals.

Every stem is harvested at precisely the right stage of bloom — for you, not the global market — so it opens fully in your home and lasts as long as possible. That’s the difference between a flower grown with care right here in Ballard and one grown for logistics.

Ballard Backyard Blooms exists because we all deserve small bits of joy — and sometimes that joy is a bouquet that sits on your table and opens a little more beautifully every single day.

Judy’s Blooms

“The people with the least access to beauty deserve it the most.”

This program is named for my mother, Judy, who lived with paranoid schizophrenia and was unhoused for many decades. She had very little, but she knew how to appreciate beauty. Especially roses.

Judy never got to enjoy the simple pleasure of a fresh bouquet on her table. That stayed with me. It’s part of why I started this farm, and it’s the reason a portion of every single purchase goes toward bringing flowers to people who rarely get to experience their beauty — residents of shelters, mental health facilities, transitional housing, and others in our community who deserve a little more care and beauty too.

When you buy from Ballard Backyard Blooms, you’re not just treating yourself or someone you love. You’re helping us extend that gift a little further.

🌹 A portion of every purchase funds Judy’s Blooms — delivering flowers to shelters, mental health facilities, and transitional housing across Seattle.

Meet the grower

Penny, grower at Ballard Backyard Blooms

Hi, I’m Penny.

I’ve called Ballard home for nearly two decades, and I’m not afraid to say this neighborhood is my favorite. The backyard that grows these flowers is the same one I’ve been tending for years.

By day I’m a grant writer for local Seattle nonprofits — a calling I love. But no matter how full the day gets, I find my way back to the soil. Early mornings, lunch breaks, stolen moments between meetings — if there’s garden time to be had, I’m there. I am, at heart, a grower.

Flower farming is how I spoil myself. It gets me outside, slows me down, and carries me through the long Pacific Northwest winters. I obsessively watch seeds sprout when it’s dark and grey outside, then grow into sturdy seedlings, then bloom into something almost unreasonably beautiful. There’s nothing quite like it.

My favorite flowers? Dahlias for their sheer lushness. They’re an obsession. And stock for its scent, which is reason enough to grow anything.

Favorite bloom
Dahlias — for their lushness. Stock — for their scent.
Why I grow
To be outside. To make it through winter. To share something beautiful.
