✦ Grown in Ballard, Seattle

Small acts of beauty. Grown right here. Shared with love.

Ballard Backyard Blooms is a backyard flower farm rooted in the belief that beautiful flowers are for everyone. Especially for those who don’t think they deserve them. (You do! We all do.)

Flowers delight us. Calm us. Reduce our anxiety and increase our happiness. Especially for women. (Weird, right? It’s true. They study this stuff.)

Here on this urban microplot, we grow specialty cut flowers in the heart of west Ballard—without the pesticides and carbon footprint—so you can skip the planning and sowing and watering and harvesting and skip right to the delight. And you can feel good about that choice. We grow everything organically and in harmony with nature, and we snip every flower at the right stage of harvest so they last as long as possible in your home.

A portion of every purchase goes toward Judy’s Blooms, a program bringing flowers to people who rarely get to enjoy them.

Why we grow

A backyard flower farm rooted in the belief that beauty belongs to everyone.

Ballard Backyard Blooms started with a simple conviction: beauty is not a luxury. It’s something all of us need—especially on hard days. (Somehow, too many days seem hard right now?)

Flowers are a small, reliable reminder that we can choose joy and wonder. And I choose flowers.

I decided to start growing specialty cut flowers in earnest because I wanted flowers on my table more than a few times a year. But then I got addicted to seeing flowers in my home nearly year-round. And I have too many, and I love growing and sharing them with people in my community.

I’m happy to know that these beauties bring others joy, too. And that in sharing, we can eliminate some of the high environmental cost we all pay for most imported flowers.

Judy’s Blooms

“The people with the least access to beauty deserve it the most.”

This program is named for my mother, Judy, who lived with paranoid schizophrenia and was unhoused for many decades. She had very little, but she knew how to appreciate beauty. Especially roses.

Judy never got to enjoy the simple pleasure of a fresh bouquet on her table. My love for her is the reason a portion of every single purchase goes toward bringing flowers to people who rarely get to experience their beauty — residents of shelters, mental health facilities, transitional housing, and others in our community who deserve a little more care and beauty too.

When you buy from Ballard Backyard Blooms, you’re not just treating yourself or someone you love. You’re helping us extend that gift a little further.

🌹 A portion of every purchase funds Judy’s Blooms — delivering flowers to shelters, mental health facilities, and transitional housing across Seattle.

Meet the grower

Penny, grower at Ballard Backyard Blooms

Hi, I’m Penny.

I’ve called Ballard home for nearly two decades, and I’m not afraid to say this neighborhood is my favorite. The backyard that grows these flowers is the same one I’ve been tending for years, though only in the past several years so intensively for cut flower production.

By day I’m a grant writer for local Seattle nonprofits. It’s a calling I love, but I can’t help but choose to play in the dirt over more time at my desk. I am, at heart, a grower.

Flower farming is how I spoil myself. It gets me outside, slows me down, and carries me through the long Pacific Northwest winters. I obsessively watch seeds sprout when it’s dark and grey outside, then grow into sturdy seedlings, then bloom into something almost unreasonably beautiful. There’s nothing quite like it.

My favorite flowers? Dahlias for their sheer lushness. They’re an obsession. And stock for its scent, which is reason enough to grow anything.

Favorite bloom
Dahlias — for their lushness. Stock — for their scent.
Why I grow
To be outside. To make it through winter. To share something beautiful.
